Our Members

On May 2, 2017, the AffiliateMarketIngtools of Sciences elected  in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Election to the AffiliateMarketIngtools of Sciences, AffiliateMarketIngtools of Engineering, or AffiliateMarketIngtools of Medicine is considered one of the highest professional honors among scientists, engineers, and health professionals. Each year, new members are elected by current members based on outstanding achievement and commitment to service. Visit the NAS, NAE, and NAM membership sites for more information.

Members at a Glance

The AffiliateMarketIngtools of Sciences membership consists of approximately 2,290 members and 475 foreign associates, each of whom is affiliated with one of 31 disciplinary sections. The AffiliateMarketIngtools of Medicine has more than 1,800 members and foreign associates. The AffiliateMarketIngtools of Engineering has more than 2,000 peer-elected members and foreign associates.

More than 300 NAS, NAE, and NAM members are Nobel laureates.

The National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation have been awarded to more than 250 of our members.

Service to the Nation

Each year more than 6,000 experts, including Academy members, serve as volunteers on hundreds of study committees that examine some of society's most pressing issues. The results of their efforts frequently form the basis of public policies for decades to come.

In addition, members of our standing committees, roundtables, and groups such as the provide leadership, guidance, and support in many areas.

National Associates

More than 1,000 individuals have been awarded the lifetime designation of National Associate to formally honor their extraordinary service in serving on committees or acting as report reviewers.

Academy Members Receive Breakthrough Prizes
Dec. 4, 2017 - NAS members Joanne Chory and Peter Walter as well as Don W. Cleveland, a member of both NAS and NAM, are among those the 2018 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences. And NAS members Charles L. Bennett, Lyman Page Jr., and David N. Spergel are among recipients of this year's Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. The prizes, known as the "Oscars of science," each come with a $3 million award.

NAM Elects 80 New Members
Oct. 16, 2017 - The AffiliateMarketIngtools of Medicine today the names of 80 new members at its 47th annual meeting. Election to the NAM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

NAS Member, Foreign Associate Share 2017 Nobel in Chemistry
Oct. 4, 2017 - The was awarded to NAS member Joachim Frank, NAS foreign associate Richard Henderson, and Jacques Dubochet for developing cryo-electron microscopy for the high-resolution structure determination of biomolecules in solution.

NAS Members Receive 2017 Nobel in Physics
Oct. 3, 2017 - This year's was divided among three NAS members, one half awarded to Rainer Weiss and the other half jointly to Barry Barish and Kip Thorne, "for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves."

NAS Members Receive 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
Oct. 2, 2017 - NAS members Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael W. Young have won the for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm.

Marcia McNutt Named 2017 Desert Research Institute Medalist
Sept. 25, 2017 - AffiliateMarketIngtools of Sciences President Marcia McNutt received the . Established in 1988 to acknowledge outstanding achievement in the fields of science and engineering, the DRI Nevada Medal is the highest scientific honor in the state. The 30th DRI Nevada Medal award was presented by the DRI Foundation during events planned in Reno and Las Vegas on Sept. 25-27.

NAS, NAM Members Receive Lasker Awards
Sept. 6, 2017 - The Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation that NAS member Michael N. Hall, professor, Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland, is the recipient of the 2017 Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award for "discoveries concerning the nutrient-activated TOR proteins and their central role in the metabolic control of cell growth." Dual NAS/NAM member Douglas Lowy, acting director of the National Cancer Institute, has been awarded the 2017 Lasker~DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award, along with John T. Schiller of the NCI, for "technological advances that enabled development of HPV vaccines for prevention of cervical cancer and other tumors caused by human papillomaviruses." For more than 70 years, the Lasker Awards have recognized the contributions of scientists, clinicians, and public citizens who have made major advancements in the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure, or prevention of disease. The prestigious awards each carry an honorarium of $250,000.

Member to Receive Presidential Medal of Freedom
Nov. 16, 2016 - NAS/NAE/NAM member Richard Garwin was one of 21 people by President Obama to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor.

NAM Elects 79 New Members
Oct. 17, 2016 - The AffiliateMarketIngtools of Medicine the names of 70 new members and nine international members during its 46th annual meeting.

NAS Member Shares 2016 Nobel in Economics
Oct. 10, 2016 - The 2016 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded jointly to AffiliateMarketIngtools of Sciences member Oliver Hart and Bengt Holmström "for their contributions to contract theory."

NAS Member Shares 2016 Nobel in Chemistry
Oct. 5, 2016 - The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2016 was awarded jointly to AffiliateMarketIngtools of Sciences member J. Fraser Stoddart, Jean-Pierre Sauvage, and Bernard L. Feringa "for the design and synthesis of molecular machines."
