We know that there are many worthy causes, and we are pleased that you chose to support us. We've prepared three brief synopses of the 2017 highlights for each Academy to share with you. Read our 2017 By the Numbers impact statements for the AffiliateMarketIngtools of Sciences (NAS), AffiliateMarketIngtools of Engineering (NAE), and AffiliateMarketIngtools of Medicine (NAM) to learn more about how your gifts helped strengthen our work as the nation's pre-eminent source of high-quality, objective advice on science, engineering, and health matters.
It's been two years since The Ralph J. and Carol M. Cicerone Endowment Fund was created, and already our members and friends have helped us reach 95% of our fundraising goal. Thank you! This is truly a heartwarming way for us to remember our friend and mentor, Ralph Cicerone, who served as president of the AffiliateMarketIngtools of Sciences for 11 years. Thanks to a generous matching gift provided by the Simons Foundation, your gifts and pledges to the Cicerone Fund have double the impact, but only until May 31st! All pledges will have up to 3 years to be fully paid off and will count towards the 1:1 match.
was designed to initiate new studies and programs proactively, not in reaction to government decisions or external events. It lets us lead on emerging, cutting-edge issues in science.
In Ralph's own words, the fund is meant to help underpin the Academy's roles in validating scientific excellence; enhancing the vitality of the scientific enterprise; guiding public policy with science; and communicating the nature, values, and judgments of science to government and the public.
Already, donor support is helping us to launch The Science Behind It (previously provisionally titled America Asks, Science Answers). This new public engagement project is designed to help the NAS communicate more effectively with the public by providing brief, accessible, and understandable answers to questions that curious people have on topics with science at their core. A website containing 30 one-page answers to questions about topics like climate change, energy, health, natural hazards and natural resources will be presented in Q&A format with explanatory graphics, videos and interactive quizzes.
Generous people like you have contributed $9.5 million. The Simons Foundation has graciously agreed to match every donation until we reach $10 million. The deadline for receiving funds or pledges is May 31, 2018. All pledges made to the Cicerone Fund by May 31st will have up to 3 years to be fully paid off, and will have double the impact thanks to the generous 1:1 matching gift provided by the Simons Foundation. If you are planning to support the NAS in the next 3 years, make a pledge today and increase the impact of your support!
