It's been two years since the Ralph J. and Carol M. Cicerone Endowment Fund was created, and we are very pleased to report that thanks to the generous gifts from so many of our members and friends we surpassed our $10 million goal for the Endowment. This is a truly phenomenal accomplishment and a testament to the high regard with which we hold Ralph and Carol.
Thank you to all of the members, friends, and staff that stepped up to ensure we hit our goal by the May 31st deadline. In the final push to reach the goal, we achieved the largest single day of philanthropic giving in NAS history. We are grateful to the Cicerone Fund fundraising committee chaired by Dick Atkinson, as well as to the Kavli Foundation, whose generous gift closed a big gap at a crucial time.
In Ralph's own words, the endowment will "help underpin the Academy's roles in validating scientific excellence; enhancing the vitality of the scientific enterprise; guiding public policy with science; and communicating the nature, values , and judgements of science to government and the public."
